Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that most commonly affects joints of the hands. Pain, swelling and stiffness are common, along with widespread fatigue. Current disease modifying drugs include antibody treatments aimed at modifying the immune system - these have transformed the course of the disease. You can see immune cells, lymphocytes, in the background along with antibodies. Nerves are seen wrapping around the hand and fingers like vines - their signals travel to the central nervous system where they eventually are interpreted as pain. Fatigue, represented through the fog, affects the entire body and is a symptom that stops people from doing regular day to day activities.
