Description: The Gate Control Theory of Pain was published by Melzack and Wall in 1965 to provide an explanation for the experience of pain. Many parts of this theory still hold up today and have been confirmed in numerous experiments. The painting shows the sensory neuron (boulders) send signals through the gate to the central nervous system for the perception of pain. The theory describes a balance between excitatory and inhibitory input to result in either pain inhibition or pain excitation.
